Kayla Seeks
Physical Therapist Assistant I love to engage with kids by giving them the freedom and a space to be themselves. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a career in therapy? I knew I wanted to pursue a career in therapy when I was working as a swim instructor. I loved it and wanted to be able to expand my knowledge and scope of practice so that I could help children make achievements out of the water. Who inspires you in your profession? My former professor/clinical instructor/boss and overall mentor, Barney, is one of my biggest inspirations in my profession. He taught me the book knowledge I needed to graduate as well as the clinical skills that I needed to succeed in the profession. Beyond “teachable” skills, his compassion, going the extra mile, and genuine love of the job were infectious and significantly influenced the kind of therapist I have become. What is your favorite way to engage with kids? I try to engage with kids by giving them the freedom and a space to be themselves and feel their feelings (even when they aren’t happy ones). Once they know they can be themselves with me, the rest seems to fall into place. Tell us about a challenge that you watched a child overcome. I recently treated a child who was fearful of standing on one leg for an extended period. I asked her to give me a “foot five” and she thought it was so fun that she didn’t even realize she’d been standing on one foot, and she was very excited when she realized what she had just achieved. What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Outside of work, I love to spend time with my husband and our dogs and cats. I also love to cook, watch Gordon Ramsay TV shows and UFC fights.
