Building Strength: Jarron Overcomes Athletic Injury

Jarron loves to compete. As an active 10-year-old, he enjoys playing baseball and football. So when he started experiencing progressive shoulder pain during baseball season, his parents sought out treatment for him. They sought out the advice of an orthopedic specialist at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis, who referred Jarron to 321go Kids for therapy.

At 321go Kids, Physical Therapist Diana worked with Jarron and immediately noticed his pain response to activities like rotating his arm. They worked on building his muscles with therapy, starting with no resistance and moving to using resistance. These exercises focused on strengthening his shoulder, trunk, back, and chest muscles to stabilize and alleviate his pain.

Diana incorporated baseball into his therapy sessions. She would go outside with Jarron and engage him in activities involving a wiffle ball and a plastic bat. Additionally, she used weights to help Jarron build strength. Diana fondly recalls a competitive game they played called Bowling Pin Battleship, in which they bounced a heavy ball on a trampoline to knock down bowling pins. Jarron would often compete against her and win.

“Jarron made huge progress because he was so motivated. He loved showing me he could do better than I thought he could every time. His drive made him progress as far as he did,” said Diana.

Jarron’s mother, Valerie, observed his progress. “You can tell he’s much stronger; he’s built up his muscle on his left side, and you can tell the difference physically looking at him from before we started therapy. Diana made it fun for him.”

Jarron’s family worked alongside him to do his exercises at home between therapy sessions. This dedication was crucial to building his strength. As a result of this commitment and the combination of physical therapy, Jarron can now successfully do pushups and planks.

“I can’t express enough how amazing it was that 321go Kids targeted the issues and were very good at explaining things. They were very good at being hands-on and one-on-one, and they made everyone feel wonderful,” said Valerie.

Due to his persistence and motivation, Jarron only required one package of therapy sessions. His increased strength has changed his outlook on his sixth baseball season. He is excited to be able to compete without pain.
