Camille Kern

Speech-Language Pathologist

With consistent modeling and support, I’ve watched these children begin to understand that they have a voice.

When did you first know you wanted to pursue a career in therapy? I always knew I wanted work in healthcare, but it took me some time to figure out exactly what that would look like! I stumbled across speech therapy as a career in college when I wanted to change my major. I started shadowing therapists in my area and fell in love with the field! I love being able to meet kids where they are and help them grow in a fun environment.

Who inspires you in your profession? As I am a recent graduate, I have been so inspired by my professors and supervisors throughout the past two years of graduate school. I was able to see the variety within the field of speech pathology and encounter so many unique experiences. Watching them lead after years in the field and across many different settings, I felt inspired and excited to start my journey in this field!

What is your favorite way to engage with kids? I love to follow the child's lead! I love to be silly and creative, whether that be doing crafts or playing games (with our own rules of course). I love anything that will make a child smile and giggle!

Tell us about a challenge that you watched a child overcome? One of the most meaningful challenges I’ve seen a child overcome is learning how to communicate after experiencing significant frustration without a reliable way to express themselves. I work a lot with AAC, and I’ve had several patients who had little to no prior exposure and relied on limited verbalizations or behaviors to communicate.

With consistent modeling and support, I’ve watched these children begin to understand that they have a voice. Once they feel successful using their device, their confidence grows quickly. They start to seek it out to communicate, and many even increase their verbal output alongside AAC use.

Seeing that shift from frustration to confidence is something that really stands out to me and continues to motivate my work

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? I am a big hobby-lover! I love to pick up new hobbies (even if they are short-lived...). I love working out, whether that be lifting, swimming, running, pilates, you name it. I also love to read, sew, and bake. Faith is a huge part of my life as well, so I enjoy attending church and bible study with friends, as well as spending time with family!
