Having the ability to positively impact children’s lives and help them communicate to their loved ones keeps me motivated!

When did you first know you wanted to pursue a career in therapy? I always knew I wanted to be in healthcare. Helping others and giving back to the community are very important to me. Once I learned about speech therapy it was love at first sight! I get to help others communicate- connecting them to their friends, family, and caregivers. Speech therapy is also so diverse, working with articulation, language, fluency, swallowing, and more. It never gets boring!

Who inspires you in your profession? The kids I work with inspire me the most! Having the ability to positively impact children’s lives and help them communicate to their loved ones keeps me motivated!

What is your favorite way to engage with kids? I am a huge advocate for play-based therapy! I love using board games and toys to facilitate learning. Research shows that it takes 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain UNLESS it is done through play. Then, it takes between 10-20 repetitions!

Tell us about a challenge that you watched a child overcome. While working in the school system, I saw a kindergartener for speech therapy who was non-verbal. He had a difficult time making friends and following instructions in the classroom. After working with him for a while, he began to use a communication board to talk to his teacher and peers. Towards the middle of the school year, I saw the student on the playground playing with friends and having fun! It was such a rewarding feeling!

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? I love to spend time outdoors with my husband and two kids! We enjoy going camping, fishing, and hiking at local state parks. I also like to read and binge watch Netflix in my free time!
