Lauren Landes

Occupational Therapist

The children I work with also inspire me every day by reminding me to stay open to trying new and challenging things while continuing to grow both personally and professionally.

When did you first know you wanted to pursue a career in therapy? I first realized I wanted to pursue a career in therapy while I was in high school. During that time, I had the opportunity to shadow an Occupational Therapist working in both outpatient orthopedic and acute care settings. Seeing firsthand the impact therapy could have on patients’ lives before I even chose the profession sparked my passion for helping others and confirmed that this was the career path I wanted to pursue.

Who inspires you in your profession? I am inspired by my coworkers, who continuously change the lives of children and families through their dedication, compassion, and purpose-driven care. The children I work with also inspire me every day by reminding me to stay open to trying new and challenging things while continuing to grow both personally and professionally.

What is your favorite way to engage with kids? My favorite way to engage with kids is through sensory play. Working in this profession has helped me become more aware of my own sensory habits, and I enjoy helping children discover strategies for getting the sensory input they need to stay regulated, engaged, and successful in their daily activities. Some of my favorite sensory activities to incorporate include swinging, jumping on the trampoline, using crash pads, obstacle courses, and other movement-based activities that make therapy both fun and meaningful for children.

Tell us about a challenge that you watched a child overcome? I have had the opportunity to watch many children overcome vestibular insecurities and gain confidence in providing themselves with the sensory input they need after working through their fears. Seeing this growth brings me so much joy within my profession because it allows children to become more open to movement-based activities, build confidence, and experience new and exciting ways to play and engage with the world around them.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Outside of work, some of my favorite activities include playing pickleball, going to Activate, swimming, shopping, attending sporting events, and spending quality time with friends and family. I always try keeping myself busy and active!
